Two University of Iowa College of Education faculty members – Erin Barnes and Jodi Linley – were recently recognized with collegiate awards for their excellence in teaching and mentoring students.

The John Deere Foundation supports teachers and students with a gift to the University of Iowa’s nationally leading Scanlan Center for School Mental Health, a partnership between the Iowa Board of Regents, Iowa Department of Education, and the University of Iowa’s College of Education.

Third-year Literacy, Culture, and Language Education doctoral student Melanie Carbine, who is also a middle school math teacher in Maryland, recognizes the need for teachers to be versed in multilingual education practices. 

Faculty from the University of Iowa College of Education School Counseling and School Psychology programs were awarded a $5.388 million grant to address shortages in the number of school-based mental health services professionals (MHSPs) available in high-need schools. Faculty from the UI College of Public Health and School of Social Work will also collaborate on the grant.

Five University of Iowa programs, including the College of Education’s Rehabilitation Counseling program which came in at No. 3, received a top-10 ranking in the recently released U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools rankings for 2024.

Brian Hand,  a science education professor in the University of Iowa College of Education, was honored with the Michael J. Brody Award for Faculty Excellence in Service.

More than 20 University of Iowa faculty, students, and staff will be working with colleagues at universities in Kosovo over the next five years to strengthen ties between higher education and the private sector, thanks to a $4 million cooperative agreement with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), partnering with Iowa State University and the Kosova Education Center.

Kelsey Ryder, an alumna of the University of Iowa College of Education's Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) program, and associate director in UI's Office of Student Financial Aid, is the recipient of the 2023 Lola Lopes Award for Undergraduate Student Advocacy. 

Liz Hollingworth, College of Education professor in Educational Leadership and director of the Center for Evaluation and Assessment, received the 2023 Learning and Teaching in Educational Leadership (LTEL) Special Interest Group (SIG) 129 Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award at the American Educational Research Association Annual meeting.
