Each year, the Office of the Vice President for Research’s (OVPR) Dare to Discover banner campaign highlights 80 researchers and scholars from across the University of Iowa.
Research conducted by Jasmin Msuya, a PhD student in the literacy culture, and language education program, was selected to be featured in this year’s campaign.
Msuya, who is from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, decodes language policy in education. More specifically, she is exploring the 2014 implementation of Tanzania’s Educational Language Policy in public secondary schools, with a particular focus on students’ transition from Swahili to English instruction. Although many Indigenous languages exist throughout Tanzania, this policy encodes Swahili as the language of instruction in primary education and English as the language of instruction in post-primary education.

The Dare to Discover banners will be displayed throughout downtown Iowa City through March of 2025.
