Department of Teaching and Learning

In the Department of Teaching and Learning, faculty are preparing today's teachers for tomorrow's schools. With a variety of certification areas at both the undergraduate and graduate level, our college has the right program for you. Experienced faculty provide opportunities for students to learn from cutting-edge technologies. In addition, faculty conduct cutting edge research, securing millions of dollars in external funding. Whether applying to an elementary or high school as a beginning teacher or a research university as a faculty member, our graduates are in high demand.

Art Education

Prepares artists as teachers of art, scholars, and supervisors of art in community settings, museums, departments of education, and schools.

Elementary Education

The Elementary Education program will prepare you to be an outstanding K-6 teacher who will truly realize the capabilities of every learner in your future classroom.

English Education

English Education students become committed classroom teachers that uplift, empower and support their students through the written word.

Literacy, Culture, and Language Education

The Literacy, Culture, and Language Education (LCLE) program brings together scholarly traditions and contemporary theory in Multilingual Education and Applied Linguistics, Literacy and Cultural Studies, and Social Studies Education.

Mathematics Education

The Mathematics Education program prepares future educators and researchers to be responsive in teaching practice to develop mathematical understanding for all.

Music Education

The Music Education program is committed to preparing engaged and excellent music teachers, practitioners, and scholars.

Science Education

The Science Education program provides students with classroom, research, and course curriculum development opportunities to become educators and researchers at the forefront of the profession.

Social Studies Education

The Social Studies Education program prepares educators to expand and deepen their students’ critical knowledge and thinking about history, government, geography, and the social sciences.

Special Education

The Special Education program cultivates highly-competent professionals who are committed to the education, rights, and well-being of individuals with or at risk for disabilities.

STEM Education

The online MS in STEM Education program provides graduates with the tools to effectively engage learners in the 21st century.

Teaching, Leadership, and Cultural Competency

Teaching, Leadership, and Cultural Competency (MATLCC) program is designed to build the requisite skillset necessary for educators who want to lead curriculum and instructional development strategies in education and become effective teacher leaders.

Felderman juggles academics, parenthood on journey to becoming educator

College of Education graduate Kaitlin Felderman was determined to get her degree, juggling life as a student, spouse, parent, and commuter. Felderman, who was selected as the college's undergraduate student commencement speaker, says the most rewarding aspect of teaching middle schoolers is supporting their growth during a crucial developmental period.

U.S. Department of Education grant addresses teacher shortage, diversifies workforce

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded the UI College of Education a $1.26 million grant for a program that will partner with Iowa school districts, community colleges, and community partners. The program will support 40 high quality elementary teachers through coursework and field experiences, resulting in a Bachelor of Arts, a teaching license, and a K12 ESL endorsement in Iowa.
