The staff spotlight series celebrates and elevates all the people who make the UI College of Education such a special place to work. This spotlight recognizes the critical contributions our staff members make to the College of Education community in support of our faculty and students.
Misty Brents has served as a senior academic advisor in the Office of Student Services for 12 years, but she’s been a Hawkeye for much longer. Her journey to the College of Education started hundreds of miles from the Midwest, when Brents lived and attended college in California and Colorado. Wanting a change, she transferred to the University of Iowa and earned her Bachelor of Arts in History in 2005.
Brents went on to complete her Master of Arts degree in postsecondary education in 2011 working as an academic advisor at Kirkwood Community College before returning to the University of Iowa’s College of Education in 2014. Since then, she’s worked to support and advise undergraduate elementary education students.
When it comes to her favorite part of working at the college, Brents’s answer is simple: the students. “Being able to support their growth, celebrate their successes, and play a small role in preparing future educators is incredibly meaningful." Through more than a decade of doing just that, Brents has supported hundreds of Hawkeyes on their journeys to become teachers.
What’s one project or initiative you’ve enjoyed being part of?
I’ve really enjoyed being part of initiatives that build partnerships with community colleges across Iowa while also improving the student experience. Collaborating on projects that create clearer pathways, strengthen support, and help students feel confident and connected as they move through their programs has also been rewarding
What's your favorite memory as a Hawkeye?
I’ve been part of the university as both a student and a staff member for over 20 years, which makes it hard to choose. I think returning to become an Academic Advisor has always been one of my happiest moments.
What are your hobbies, interests, or special talents? What would colleagues be surprised to know about you?
I don't think anyone would be surprised, but I have an obsession with horses. I love riding, training, and competing in barrel racing throughout the country.
What’s something new you’d like to try or learn?
Photography
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I'm very excited for my trip to Japan this summer. I would really like to go to Croatia in a couple of years.
