The staff spotlight series celebrates and elevates all the people who make the UI College of Education such a special place to work. This spotlight recognizes the critical contributions our staff members make to the College of Education community in support of our faculty and students.
Carter Burks works in two key roles in the College of Education as senior academic advisor for Elementary Education and outreach and leadership coordinator. The titles are different, but the core work is the same: helping students in the college successfully navigate their journeys to become educators.
Burks joined the Office of Student Services team five years ago, following over a decade spent as both a student and staff member at various Texas universities. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Texas, Burks attended Texas A&M University to earn his Master of Science in Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education. He spent time at the University of Texas as an academic advisor and served as a program coordinator at the University of North Texas before making the jump north to join the University of Iowa’s College of Education.
In his role, Burks advises and guides students through their academic paths to graduation and teaching licensure. Through intentional strategy development and student-centered programming, Burks prioritizes fostering a strong sense of inclusion and belonging for students in the college.
