The staff spotlight series celebrates and elevates all the people who make the UI College of Education such a special place to work. This spotlight recognizes the critical contributions our staff members make to the College of Education community in support of our faculty and students.

As the Educational Licensure Specialist, Betsy Justis is the self-described “end of the train” for the College of Education’s Teacher Education Program. If students don’t know her during their first year, they should know her by their last.

The Teacher Education Program prepares future teachers for careers in elementary or secondary education, providing them with initial licensure for teaching in Iowa.

A former UI student, Justis graduated from the Teacher Education Program in 1988. A winding professional history spanning educational publishing, volunteer management, stay-at-home parenting, and more led her back to the College of Education four years ago.

“Now I’m here! And glad about that!”

What does your job entail in the College of Education?

I'm the "end of the train" in our Teacher Education Program, helping to ensure our students have met all the state requirements to be licensed teachers in Iowa. I also help in-service teachers determine a path to add endorsements. I also work with the Regents Alternative Pathway to Licensure program (RAPIL), the alternative teacher education program, in licensure.

What is your favorite part about working at the College of Education?

The people! I have never worked with such talented people who all have the goal of helping students. It's an honor to work here.

What's your favorite memory as a Hawkeye?

I married Herky.

What are your hobbies, interests, or special talents? What would colleagues be surprised to know about you?

I like home improvement projects and like to sew and knit. I also have an Etsy shop where I sell vintage tchotchkes.

Where is your favorite place to eat in downtown Iowa City?

Micky's of course – it's been a fav since college days. Who doesn't love a conglomeration on Tuesdays? And that popcorn machine – Love. It.

What is something on campus that you look forward to participating in or doing?

I love the Discover Your University series. It's an awesome opportunity to learn about where we work and the community in which we live.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Anywhere with my family. (Not very original, but I like traveling with the fam.)

What book, movie, or TV show has been keeping your attention lately?

I'm in love with Vera Stanhope lately – both the show and the Anne Cleeve books. I also enjoy true crime – as in the My Favorite Murder podcast. SSDGM!
