The staff spotlight series celebrates and elevates all the people who make the UI College of Education such a special place to work. This spotlight recognizes the critical contributions our staff members make to the College of Education community in support of our faculty and students.
Beginning as a Residence Life Program Coordinator in 2011, Ben Walizer has held five positions at the University of Iowa. After working as the Interim Director for the Iowa Reading Research Center, he eventually landed as the Director of Administration for the Dean’s Office of the College of Education in 2023.
With a Master of Education in Counselor Education and Student Affairs from Clemson University, Walizer felt at home in the College of Education. His position is an eclectic one – he has a hand in college operations, facility projects, administration, customer service, and more.
If there's a question of who does something... a good bet is that I can help.
More than just a leader in the college, Walizer is also a student. Since the fall of 2023, Walizer has been pursuing a Doctorate of Education (EdD) from the UI College of Education’s Department of Educational Policy and Leadership Studies.
What is your favorite part about working at the College of Education?
The people. The building is filled with educators and mental health providers. Every day is a great day to have a welcoming conversation with our faculty, staff, and students.
What's your favorite memory as a Hawkeye?
Two specific Iowa Women's Basketball games – first, I was sitting a few rows up behind the basket when Caitlin Clark hit the walk-off three pointer against Michigan State in 2024. Then, six weeks later I was there when she broke the all-time scoring record against Michigan. Those were the only two games I went to that year!
What are your hobbies, interests, or special talents? What would colleagues be surprised to know about you?
I'm a diehard Green Bay Packers fan. I'm from Madison, Wisconsin and my wife is from Green Bay, Wisconsin so it's a requirement at our house to bleed Green and Gold. My kids are on the list for season tickets when they are 70. I try to go to at least one game per year and rarely miss any game during the season.
Where is your favorite place to eat in downtown Iowa City?
Micky's Irish Pub
What is something on campus that you look forward to participating in or doing?
I love attending the Homecoming Parade and seeing all the familiar faces in the parade!
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?
My favorite two cities to visit are Boston and Washington D.C. I would regularly visit both if I could!
What book, movie, or TV show has been keeping your attention lately?
The West Wing
