The MA program in Educational Measurement and Statistics provides training and hands-on experience with the foundational quantitative methods techniques that are at the core of methods used in data science, applied statistics, and educational measurement.

This 30- semester-hour Educational Measurement and Statistics program offers both thesis and non-thesis options. Both options are intended for students seeking positions that call for competence in educational measurement and research methodology; however, the thesis option is intended for students who plan to take advanced work in statistical methods or educational measurement at the PhD level.

Applications completed after these deadlines will be reviewed; however, for fullest consideration, all application materials should be submitted before the deadlines.

Applicants typically are expected to meet the following admission criteria:

  • A bachelor’s degree from a Regionally Accredited American College or University, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Admissions.
  • English Proficiency Requirements (international applicants)
  • Undergraduate grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00 or better on a four-point scale.
  • Graduate GPA or 3.00 or better on a four-point scale.
  • Preferred GRE score of 300 or higher. Normally if the applicant's GRE composite score of verbal and quantitative tests is less than 300, the applicant will not be accepted. However, if there is offsetting evidence of superior ability, admission may be granted on a conditional basis.
  • At least one course in college mathematics is highly desirable.
  • Experience as a teacher or a researcher is also highly desirable.

  • Copies of official transcripts of all previous college work, graduate and undergraduate.
  • Official report of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (UI Institutional code: 6681)
  • Official TOEFL scores may be required for some non-native speakers of English
  • Statement of purpose.
  • Three letters of recommendation*

* You will be asked to give the contact information of your recommenders, including their email, on your Admissions Profile. The recommender will then get an email with instructions on how to upload the recommendation letter and/or form.

Students who want to transfer to Educational Measurement and Statistics from another program within the University of Iowa must submit a statement that explains why they want to change programs and why they think the Educational Measurement and Statistics program will help them accomplish their educational and vocational goals.
