Blending core concepts from mental health, substance use, and career counseling, the certificate prepares graduates to apply practical, behavioral focused interventions that help clients improve functioning in work and community settings.
The certificate instruction is offered through synchronous online classes. The certificate is available to current University of Iowa graduate students and non-degree seeking professionals working to enhance their skills in this area.
Admission and Enrollment
Enrollment
Degree-seeking Graduate Students
For students completing the certificate in addition to graduate studies must complete and submit the Certificate Enrollment Application.
Non-degree seeking Graduate Students
For students wanting to complete the certificate as a standalone, you must complete the University of Iowa non-degree online application form. In the “Purpose of Attending” box, type that you are applying to complete the Certificate in Integrated Career, Substance Abuse, and Mental Health Counseling. With this application you will have to pay a $40 admission fee and submit an official transcript.
Additionally, you must complete and submit the Certificate Enrollment Application.
NOTE: You may, at any time, pursue admission into a graduate program at the University of Iowa. Having been enrolled in the certificate program will not guarantee acceptance into any graduate program at the University of Iowa. If accepted into a program, inform your advisor about your enrollment in the certificate and send an e-mail to the certificate director providing the name of your program of study, degree objective, and the name of your advisor.
Coursework and Completion Requirements
Coursework
The graduate Certificate in Integrated Career, Substance Use, and Mental Health Counseling requires a minimum of 12 s.h. of graduate credit and completion of the following coursework.
- CSED:5278 Applied Microcounseling
- CSED:5260 – Diagnosis and Management of Mental Health, Substance Use, and Co Occurring Disorders OR
CSED: 5248 – Diagnosis and Treatment Planning in Counseling - CSED:5262 Workplace Support for Chronic Illness and Substance Use Disorders
- CSED:5264 Integrated Psychopharmacology
Visit the departmental website for more information about when courses are offered. Plans of study will vary by student. Students must complete CSED:5278 Applied Microcounseling before CSED: 5260 Diagnosis and Management of Mental Health, Substance Use, and Co-Occurring Disorders.
Completion Requirements
After completing the required coursework, submit your Certificate Completion Form to the Director of the certificate program. Your completed form will be reviewed by the certificate Director and the Graduate College, and your transcript will be reviewed to confirm course completion (Note: you may be enrolled in the final required course while submitting the Certificate Completion Form). You will receive the certificate, and it will be noted on your transcript after all courses have been completed and the form has been processed.
Course Delivery and Advising
Courses will be conducted via online synchronous instruction.
The director of the program will serve as the certificate advisor. The director will assist students in tracking their progress towards completion of the certificate.
