Growing up with a mother and father who were both teachers, University of Iowa College of Education alumnus Seth McGrane was inspired to join the profession from an early age.
McGrane, who is a graduate of the college’s Elementary Education program (BA ’07), has found a home and a career in Northern Iowa where he is currently a 4th grade teacher at Shell Rock Elementary in Shell Rock, Iowa.
McGrane was recently featured in Teacher’s Corner, a weekly column published by Waverly Newspapers.

“Inspired by a family of educators, fourth-grade Shell Rock Elementary teacher Seth McGrane has found a connection with the small, tight-knit community, inside and outside of the classroom.
‘School had always felt comfortable to me and I knew I wanted to provide that same feeling to my own students,’ he explained.
McGrane grew up in Denison, Iowa, in a home full of teachers, with his mother being a French and Spanish teacher, and his father being a history teacher and guidance counselor. It was not until an elective class in high school called Cadet Teaching, where he went into a third-grade classroom, that he felt rooted in his path to become a teacher.
‘I really fell in love with teaching younger kids and following the routines. I also feel like I could be a teacher kids look up to, especially since you do not see a lot of male elementary teachers,’ he said.
He went on to graduate from the University of Iowa in Elementary Education, where his career took off at Webster City, Iowa, for seven years, teaching third-grade before transitioning to fourth-grade at Shell Rock Elementary in 2014.”
