University of Iowa College of Education Professor Nicholas A. Bowman has been selected as a 2025 Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) Fellow.
Bowman, who is the Mary Louise Petersen Chair in Higher Education and professor in the college’s Higher Education and Student Affairs program is proud to be a part of this inaugural cohort.
“I was thrilled … especially because this is the first year of the ASHE Fellows program,” says Bowman. “I didn’t know who else had been designated a fellow until weeks after I found out, and I was quite honored to see the other names, which include many leaders in our field.”
With more than 2,000 members, ASHE, which is celebrating its 50th year in 2025, is dedicated to higher education as a field of study. About half of its members are university faculty, mostly in academic programs that focus on some aspect of higher education, such as administration, leadership, or policy.
Bowman has been a member of association since 2002, which was his first year of graduate school at the University of Michigan.
According to a formal announcement released by the association, “ASHE is excited to recognize the inaugural cohort of ASHE Fellows for their integrity, advancement of knowledge, mentoring, and service. This inaugural cohort is representative of the diversity of ASHE membership and the field of higher education.”
To be considered for this fellowship, Bowman was required to show that he has achieved the rank of full professor or associate professor; has had a career in higher education for more than 20 years (inclusive of graduate school); and has been a member of ASHE for at least 10 years.
“It’s amazing to be in the company of scholars whose work I’ve read for a very long time. ASHE is my primary professional organization, and that makes this honor even more special,” adds Bowman.
ASHE will formally recognize Bowman and other fellows from the 2025 cohort during an induction ceremony at its annual conference November 12-15 in Denver, Colorado.
