You will be prepared to lead in 21st-century classrooms, inspiring a joy and appreciation for learning science, so critical to the future of our economy and communities across the state, nation, and world.

The Science Education program provides you with classroom, research, and course curriculum development opportunities to become an educators and researcher at the forefront of your profession. Additionally, you will have access to Iowa’s top science and engineering programs, becoming a competitive job applicant and leader in your field.

Programs with Teacher Licensure

BA Science Education

Dual-degree program with licensure.

BA/MAT Science Education

Undergraduate + Graduate degree an accelerated 5-year plan.

MAT Science Education

Master's in Teaching for those who have already completed a BS/BA in an area of science.

Programs (Non-licensure)

BS Science Studies

Undergraduate degree preparing those who want to teach outside the classroom. 

MS STEM Education

Applications are not being accepted at this time.

MS Science Education

Master’s for advanced understandings of classrooms, college teaching, museum and outreach management, and potential preparation for PhD

PhD Science Education

Doctoral degree in area of specialization; must complete a thesis.

We believe you shouldn’t have to wait until your final semester of college to work with students and make sure teaching is right for you. In your program you will be given opportunities to work in real classrooms with students from the moment you are admitted to the program.

Samantha Pedek knew she wanted to be a teacher ever since third grade. However, the 2023 graduate with a Master of Arts in Teaching in Science Education experienced a winding path and challenges along the way.

Delivering fun to the science classroom

Teaching runs in Zac Gavin’s blood. The soon-to-be University of Iowa graduate will become part of the third generation of teachers in his family, and he can’t wait to inspire future generations at his alma mater in Maquoketa, Iowa.
