The Mathematics Education program is committed to training undergraduate and graduate students in the latest developments in the teaching and learning of mathematics in order to impact future generations in an ever-changing society.
The Mathematics Education program prepares future educators and researchers to communicate clearly and instruct mathematics in the classroom. Through coursework and spending time in school classrooms, students in this program will learn to help others understand mathematics and how the subject’s concepts can be applied to a wide array of analytical, technological, scientific, security, and economic applications.

The dual degree program in Mathematics Education prepares students for teaching grades 5 through 12. Students earn two bachelor's degrees: a bachelor of arts from the College of Education, and a bachelor's degree from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS).

Overview
The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and the College of Education at The University of Iowa offer students the opportunity to earn their Bachelor's in Math plus a Master's degree in Education in as little as five years.
The Combined B.A./M.A.T. program provides a seamless process whereby students can progress from undergrad to graduate status. The usual period of study for both the Bachelor’s and the Master’s degree is six years. Through careful planning, many of the courses required for the M.A.T. program can be taken during the undergraduate years, creating an opportunity to focus the fifth year of study on the comprehensive and student teaching requirements.
A student is eligible to apply to the program during their sophomore or junior year if they have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 (or meet special considerations). Application must include:

Overview
The M.A.T. program in Mathematics Education prepares candidates with no prior teaching experience, to teach math in K-12 schools.
This degree is designed primarily for those holding a B.S. or B.A. in mathematics and who would like to become teachers, but have no previous coursework in education. It features advanced work in math along with the courses required for certification, which candidates receive upon graduation. This program consists of 49 semester hours of coursework, but additional coursework may be advised to render the candidate’s baccalaureate degree equivalent to one from the University of Iowa.

The master’s program in Mathematics Education provides students with advanced specialization in mathematics and education as a better foundation for K-12 teaching.
Candidates must meet the M.A. admission requirements of the Graduate College and, except in unusual cases, hold a professional license/certificate to teach school mathematics.

Overview
The Math Education Ph.D. program takes anywhere from 72 to 90 semester hours to complete. Applicants must have an undergraduate major in mathematics or the equivalent; a master's degree in mathematics, mathematics education, or education; a 3.00 g.p.a. or above; and, except in unusual circumstances, a current teaching license/certificate and at least two years of teaching experience. Credit earned more than 10 years previously must be updated.
