Plan ahead. Some steps in the application process may take several weeks to complete. Please allow at least 6 weeks to complete and submit your application.

Submit everything by the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed by the faculty. Admission is selective and meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Meeting the priority deadline is highly recommended.

To be admitted for Spring 2021: Priority deadline of October 1, 2020. Final cutoff: December 1, 2020.

To be admitted for Summer or Fall 2021: Priority deadline of March 1, 2021. Final cutoff: May 1, 2021.

These admission requirements and application instructions are for current high school students or first time college students only.

Two admission paths

There are two admission paths for current high school/ first-time college students who want to become teachers - direct admission and regular admission.

Direct Admission

Students interested in Elementary Education or Music Education who meet certain additional requirements may be admitted directly into the Teacher Education Program when they submit their application to the University of Iowa. If you indicate your interest in either Elementary or Music on your application and meet the additional requirements, you will be notified of the next steps to take.

  • Music Education: High school GPA of 3.0 or higher and have been accepted into a music studio.
  • Elementary Education: High school GPA of 3.8 or higher and an ACT composite score of 27 or higher.

Regular Admission

If you were not eligible for direct admission to our program when you were accepted to UI, you may submit an application to the Teacher Education Program once you have completed 30 hours of earned college credit.

  • Be sure to indicate your interest in teaching when you visit and/or apply to the University of Iowa.
  • Follow the Teacher Education Program application instructions for current UI undergraduate students once you are admitted to the University of Iowa.

All Teacher Education Programs may be completed for undergraduate credit as a non‐degree student.

  • A cumulative grade‐point average of 3.00 on all post‐secondary courses or on at least 12 semester hours of graduate courses is required for graduate admission. Graduate applicants with grade‐point averages below 3.00 will be considered by program faculty, who may elect to petition the Graduate College to admit applicants who demonstrate exceptional promise for graduate study and teaching.

Ready to submit your application?

Once you have completed the above requirements and gathered your documents, you are ready.

To submit your application, go to the TK20 application portal and follow the provided directions. We recommend using Google Chrome, so please check your current browser information.

Create your account:

  • Click to open the “Admissions” tab at bottom. Then click on “Click here to create your account” at very bottom. DO NOT enter “username” and “password” if this is your first visit to the site.
  • Provide the required information in “Create Applicant Account” using your UI email, then click “Submit.” (Once you have created an account, you will be able to sign in using your HawkID and password rather than going back to the “Admissions” tab.)

After you've created your account (or signed in):

  • Click on “Applications” in the left side menu.
  • From the drop-down menu at top of page, select the appropriate application for your program and click “Next”
  • Complete the application
  • If you need to stop before your application is complete, click “Save” at the bottom of the form and then click “Close.” DO NOT SUBMIT until your application is complete.
  • When the application is complete, click the green “SUBMIT” button at the bottom of the form. You cannot make any changes to the application once you SUBMIT the application.

After you submit your application

You will receive a notification from the Office of Student Services that either:

  • Your application is complete and will be reviewed by the admissions committee, or
  • Your application is incomplete. Please submit the following items.

Admission decisions are sent by email approximately one month following the application deadline.

Important Information for International Applicants

Teacher Education Programs of the University of Iowa are approved preparation programs for teaching in the state of Iowa and provide good preparation for teaching elsewhere in the United States.

  • Successful applicants will have strong oral English‐language competency and demonstrate knowledge of or ability to adapt to the culture of U.S. schools.
  • For non‐native speakers of English, TOEFL is required for consideration of an application if the applicant has not completed a degree at a college or university where English is the language of instruction.
  • International applicants are encouraged to complete the 10‐Hour Pre‐Admission School Field Experience in a school that offers a U.S. curriculum. International applicants must meet the stated minimum scores on the admission test.
