Major: Elementary Education
Why did you choose to study abroad with the College of Education Global Education Initiatives?
I chose to study abroad in Senegal because I wanted to learn more about the world and experience new cultures in a deeper, more meaningful way. I had traveled abroad before, but I knew spending two weeks in an African country—especially through an education-focused program—would offer new perspectives and opportunities that would stay with me forever. As a future educator, I believe it’s so important to understand and respect different cultures so I can create a more inclusive and curious classroom. I want my students to feel inspired to explore and learn about people and places beyond their own experiences, and this trip helped me take steps toward becoming that kind of teacher.
What were your big takeaways from the trip? In other words, how did the trip change you, and what did you learn?
One of my biggest takeaways from Senegal was realizing how much power there is in lived experience and how stepping outside of your comfort zone is a privilege. At the start of the trip, I felt overwhelmed navigating a place where English wasn’t commonly spoken, adjusting to cultural differences, and just being in a totally new environment. But by the end, I found myself embracing those challenges. I was talking to new people, trying new things, and showing up in ways I hadn’t expected. I also made lifelong friends—people I shared deep conversations, laughter, and unforgettable experiences with. That sense of connection made the trip even more special. I learned that growth often comes through discomfort, and this experience gave me a deeper appreciation for different ways of life, as well as a stronger sense of who I am and want to be as a teacher.
Would you recommend this trip to others?
Absolutely. Senegal is home to some of the most welcoming, passionate people I’ve ever met. There’s so much beauty in the culture, the community, and especially in how seriously people take education. Seeing that dedication up close reminded me why I want to go into teaching. It showed me that students thrive when educators believe in them and value their learning, no matter where in the world they are.
What would you say to someone who was thinking about studying abroad?
I would say: DO IT!! Even if you feel unsure or scared at first, it’s so worth it. Being uncomfortable for a short time leads to growth you can’t get any other way. The knowledge, friendships, and experiences you gain are priceless. You’ll connect with amazing people in the country you visit and also build strong bonds with the peers you travel with—people who share your passion for education and making a difference. The community you form through this kind of experience is unlike anything else, and I know I’ll carry it with me for the rest of my life.
