Why did you choose to study abroad with the College of Education Global Education Initiatives?
I chose to study abroad in Ghana with the College of Education Global Education Initiatives because I believe that understanding diverse cultural perspectives is essential to being an effective educator.
As someone who aspires to work with students from around the world, I want to ensure that I’m equipped with the knowledge, empathy, and strategies needed to support their learning journeys. Immersing myself in global experiences allows me to deepen my cross-cultural awareness and gain insight into how educational systems and practices differ internationally.
What made this journey even more powerful was the opportunity to share it with other passionate future educators. Engaging in thoughtful conversations and shared reflection with peers helped me refine my goals and gain new inspiration for the kind of teacher I strive to become.
What were your big takeaways from the trip? In other words, how did the trip change you, and what did you learn?
Traveling to Ghana, West Africa, was one of the most eye-opening experiences I’ve ever had. The trip deeply expanded my perspective both personally and professionally. I learned how education is shaped by cultural, historical, and economic contexts, and saw firsthand how resourcefulness and resilience play a role in teaching and learning globally.
Interacting with local educators, students, and families taught me how joy and community are infused into learning spaces, even when resources are limited. It challenged my assumptions and reminded me that effective education is not solely about tools—it’s about relationships, creativity, and cultural understanding.
This experience reaffirmed my commitment to creating student-centered classrooms and strengthened my ability to empathize with learners navigating unfamiliar systems. It also made me more mindful about how I represent and teach global cultures.
Would you recommend this trip to others?
Yes, I would wholeheartedly recommend this trip to others! Not only did I gain invaluable insight into the education system in Ghana, but I also learned so much from my host family. Living with them gave me a deeper understanding of local customs, traditions, and daily life. It was an immersive cultural exchange that challenged me to grow and helped me build lasting relationships.
This kind of experience goes beyond textbooks, it’s about connecting with people, expanding your worldview, and appreciating the beauty of different ways of life. I came back not just more informed, but more empathetic, grateful, and inspired.
What would you say to someone who was thinking about studying abroad?
If you’re even thinking about studying abroad, don’t hesitate. Just apply. The experiences, relationships, and personal growth that come from stepping outside your comfort zone are absolutely worth it. You’ll learn things about the world and yourself that no classroom can teach.
It’s not just about the destination—it’s about the transformation. It never hurts to apply!
