Shelly Berkowitz smiles with a student

This is Berkowitz’s third year working as an art educator at Earlham Elementary School. In addition, Berkowitz teaches art part time at the Jewish Federation and creates art in her spare time. She currently has an exhibit open at The Lift in Des Moines, Iowa through January 31.

“It’s an honor to have a flexible curriculum so I can expand the value of art education,” says Berkowitz. “The main reason I am so dedicated to art is because my students’ work ethic is so strong that their passion reciprocates into my own artwork and ambition.”

Berkowitz is grateful to the College of Education for the connections it helped her build.

“The College of Education connected me with artists and educators that create authentic higher-level thinking through artwork and learning,” says Berkowitz. “We are always learning something new every day.”
