Happy “where do you work?” Wednesday! This week, we want you to meet alumnus Luke Jansen (BA Secondary Education and History ‘18, with an endorsement in social studies.)

Jansen is originally from Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and is now working as a teacher in Lombard, Illinois. At Glenbard East High School, in Lombard, Jansen works as a social studies teacher. He teaches World History, Economics, and AP Macroeconomics, and is also a basketball coach at the high school.

Jansen is grateful for all of the ways the University of Iowa College of Education was able to help him.

“Iowa provided me with incredible resources and support to help me succeed,” says Jansen. “My professors in the College of Education were always doing everything they could to make sure I was prepared.”

With the help of his professors, Jansen found his passion for teaching.

“I owe a lot to the College of Education,” Jansen says. “Greg Hamot was an extraordinary person and teacher who helped shape me into the teacher I am today.”

Even though Jansen is only going into his second year of teaching and first full-time position, he knows becoming a teacher was the right choice for him. He loves getting to know his students and helping them in school and in their personal lives.

“I love building relationships with my students, and helping them grow in and outside of the classroom,” says Jansen. “I also love how teaching never gets boring, because every day is different! I couldn't be happier with my decision to become a teacher.”

This year, Jansen’s school district is teaching fully online, which has made it hard for him to meet his coworkers. He is happy to be in such a supportive and positive school district.

“I am forever grateful for my experience at Iowa, and look forward to visiting soon,” says Jansen.
