UI REACH student Daniel McGregor-Huyer is gaining valuable career skills at an internship with PATV, which recently became part of Public Space 1 (PS1), an artist-led, community-driven, contemporary art center.

During his time with PATV, Mc-Gregor Huyer learned about filming, development, photography, sound, and editing. 

As part of the University of Iowa College of Education, UI REACH (Realizing Educational and Career Hopes) is a comprehensive transition program for students ages 18-25 years old with intellectual, cognitive and learning disabilities. UI REACH offers an integrated college experience in a caring and structured environment.

UI REACH develops a variety of individualized work experiences for its students.  Students engage in internships starting the second year, and UI REACH staff support students in their interviews, first day of work, and over time as needed.  Hard skills are learned on the job through training provided by the internship site.  Site visits, reports, and data analysis help guide any interventions and feedback needed for the students’ improvement and success.

McGregor-Huyer, Class of 2019 from Mahtomedi, Minnesota, who is in his third year with UI REACH, credits the internship with helping him gain new skills and confidence.

“At my internship, I learned something new every day that will help develop me in a way I can feel successful,” says McGregor-Huyer.

McGregor-Huyer plans to work in film and video production in the future.
