Faculty from the University of Iowa College of Education Special Education and School Psychology programs were awarded a $1.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services.

The project, Interdisciplinary Training Project in Special Education and School Psychology, will address national, regional, and state shortages of special education and school psychologists by preparing them in intensive intervention and assessment for school-aged children with disabilities who have high-intensity needs.

Allison Bruhn, associate professor in Special Education, will serve as the project director. Co-project directors include Special Education assistant professors Shawn Datchuk and Seth King and School Psychology faculty Ann Santos, Kelly Schieltz, and Matt O’Brien.

The grant will fund 18 graduate students. Through rigorous coursework, signature assignments, a TLC track, field experiences, and an expert scholar series, this project will yield a cohort of professionals who can collaborate in meaningful and effective ways to improve outcomes of students with disabilities through intensive academic, behavioral, and social-emotional interventions.
