If I had to identify one decision that shaped the course of my life more than any other, it would be choosing to attend the University of Iowa. Simply put, Iowa changed everything for me and set me on a path I hadn’t anticipated.

I came to Iowa as a journalism and political science major – dreaming of one day becoming a news anchor on NBC’s The Today Show. But during my very first on-air segment, I froze. It didn’t take long—just a few classes—for me to realize that journalism wasn’t right for me.

Still, the classes and experiences – from Dance Marathon to what is now known as the Student Advancement Network – were far from a loss. My Master of Arts degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs provided additional expertise and insight that supported my success. I walked away with so many invaluable and transferable skills, including strong communication skills and the confidence to share stories and advocate on behalf of others.

In the nonprofit space, where I now work, those traits are integral to my success.

While at Iowa, I also met my husband, Sean (BA '12). Together, we’ve built a life filled with love and purpose – all the while raising two wonderful children, Lilah and Jack. Along the way, we’ve been fortunate to receive exceptional care from University of Iowa Health Care, which has deepened our connection to the place that means so much to us.

Iowa has been the starting point for some of the most meaningful chapters in my life – from my education to my family. That’s why I’m proud to give back to my alma mater and help ensure others have the same opportunities and support that shaped my journey.

I’m proud to support the College of Education – specifically UI REACH (Realizing Educational and Career Hopes) and the Student Aid Fund – because I believe strong educators shape our futures. When I reflect on my own journey, I can point to teachers who made a lasting impact, from Frank Durham in journalism to Jodi Linley (BA '98, MA '02) in education. Their guidance helped lead me to where I am today, working with Special Olympics Wisconsin.

I hope my dollars, time, and passion help open up new opportunities and allow other Hawkeyes to have similar experiences that I had at Iowa.
