College of Education Licensure and Standards Coordinator Dave Tingwald was recently bestowed with the Board of Regents Staff Excellence Award.
This award recognizes staff members in conjunction with colleagues from Iowa’s other state institutions. Their accomplishments have significantly benefited the university, brought honor or recognition to the university, and had a positive impact on the state of Iowa.
Tingwald, who works in the college’s Office of Student Services, was one of only six UI staff members to be presented with this prestigious award.
“I have been at the University of Iowa most of my adult life, as an undergraduate and graduate student, and as Merit and P&S staff. It was the only place I wanted to study, and one of the few places I wanted to work,” says Tingwald. “The College of Education has provided a great place to contribute. I am humbled to be included among the other recipients of the award.”
Some of Tingwald’s key job responsibilities include overseeing licensure for all educator preparation programs; preparing and submitting materials for state approval of educator preparation programs; and assisting with compliance and advising faculty on all policies and policy issues.
According to one of his nominators, “the responsibilities Dave carries out make a critically important contribution to both the university and the state. Dave is seen as an academic leader within the college and is called to consult on various academic standards and policies. His willingness to collaborate with others and help beyond his normal service is admirable and embodies staff excellence.”
Another nominator emphasized: “Perhaps the best example of Dave’s commitment to our college, university and state is his work on our Department of Education Institutional Review (DEIR), the state review conducted every seven years of the university's preparation programs for teachers, administrators, and other school professionals.. The review is ongoing, but Dave has contributed to implementation of a true self-study, gathered required information for the report from students, faculty, staff and external partners, and produced a written report communicating our current processes and work we plan to do to improve our program for all our students. Dave completes all his work with the goal of improving our ability to prepare outstanding educators for our state. I cannot think of a greater contribution.”
