Counseling psychology professor emeritus recognized as leader in suicide awareness and prevention

Counseling Psychology Professor Emeritus John Westefeld will be honored with the 2021 Distinguished Faculty Award during University of Iowa Homecoming Week as part of the Distinguished Alumni Award activities

Throughout his 42-year professional career—including 25 years at the University of Iowa College of Education—Westefeld has been a passionate teacher, scholar, and leader who dedicated his life's work to suicide awareness and prevention.

Daniel Clay, dean of the UI College of Education, says: "It is impossible to know how many lives have been saved thanks to John Westefeld and the ripple effect of students he mentored and inspired. John's work in the college and in the community is marked by passion for people, and he has a tremendous legacy of making a difference in the lives of so many."
