Guess what day it is…? “Where Do You Work? Wednesday! This week meet alumna Laura Axman (BA ’85, Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education).

Axman began her career teaching early childhood special education for four and a half years. She then started teaching first grade at Western Hills Elementary in West Des Moines, Iowa and has been there ever since. Currently, she is in her 31st year of teaching.

Axman says she loves interacting with her students, and each day is new and different.

“The relationships built with the students and their families are lifelong,” Axman says. “It’s very rewarding to follow former students and celebrate their accomplishments.”

Axman says the University of Iowa College of Education helped nurture her love of children and teaching.

“I met many friends in my classes at the University of Iowa, some I ended up teaching with,” Axman says. “I’m proud to have been a Hawkeye, and I’m proud to say both my children are now Hawkeyes.”
