Sara Nelson

Happy “Where Do You Work?” Wednesday! This week meet alumna Abby Pauley (’12 Elementary Education, Reading and Language Arts specialization).

Pauley is an Academic Support Specialist at Wickham Elementary School in Coralville, Iowa. She has been part of the Iowa City Community School District for 5 years, teaching Title I, kindergarten, and 3rdgrade at Lucas Elementary and Hills Elementary.

“As an Iowa City native, I love the opportunity to give back to my community and help to create lifelong learners,” says Pauley. “I work with students considered ‘at-risk’ who are struggling with reading, writing, or math. I love helping them develop a growth mindset where they welcome challenges and make connections between their hard work and academic growth.”

Pauley is grateful to the UI College of Education for her practicum placement, which gave her valuable experience in an actual classroom.

“Working in local schools was helpful for networking, which served me in my job hunt post-graduation,” says Pauley. “College methods classes helped provide my foundation, but I strive to implement current research and never stop developing in this ever-evolving field.”
