Happy “Where Do You Work?” Wednesday! This week meet alumna Michele Armstrong (MA ’13 Higher Education and Student Affairs).
Armstrong serves as the Assistant Dean of Students in the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She has been in this position since December 2016 and has been with the university since 2013. Prior to this, Armstrong worked as a Community Director in the Office of Residential Life and as a Community Standards Coordinator at Brown. She has also spent four seasons as a volunteer assistant coach with the Brown University women's rugby program.
“I love creating authentic relationships with students, and allowing them to explore who they want to be and how they can grow to become that person,” says Armstrong. “I also enjoy being able to apply a social justice lens to all of my work and advocating for student centered policies and procedures.”
Armstrong says she is grateful to the University of Iowa College of Education for offering opportunities and experiences that helped her grow professionally.
“The College of Education emphasized internships and hands-on experience, provided grants to explore professional development opportunities, encouraged access to administrators at every level, and allowed for presentations at regional and national conferences. All of these experiences led me to be more engaged and to think critically about the work I do every day,” says Armstrong.
