Happy “Where Do You Work?” Wednesday! This week meet alumna Becki Elkins (Ph.D. ’04 Higher Education and Student Affairs).

Elkins is an assistant professor in the Student Affairs Administration in Higher Education at the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse. This is her second year in this position. She also serves as the director for the Student Affairs Administration doctoral program.

“I love the students I work with every day – our future and current student affairs and higher education professionals. I love the energy they bring, the questions they ask, and the learning they foster. I love going to work because I believe in the value of the work I do,” says Elkins.  “I enjoy working with my colleagues, who push me to be a better teacher; who engage me in critically important discussions about research and professional practice, and who challenge me to bring social justice advocacy to the forefront of my teaching, research, and service.”

Elkins is grateful to University of Iowa College of Education faculty and her fellow students for opening doors and providing her with invaluable opportunities for growth and development.

“Faculty opened many doors for me – providing opportunities to get involved in multiple teaching and research opportunities. Second, my classmates really supported and challenged me throughout the process – and also opened many doors for me,” says Elkins. “UI faculty offered me an opportunity to serve as an adjunct faculty member in the department. I taught courses on and off for 10 years – teaching Student Services Administration; Practicum; and Cognitive and Moral Development – a fact that was critical to my ability to get the UWL faculty position.”
