Each year, the University of Iowa College of Education honors its top students with scholarships.

These awards celebrate outstanding student achievement in areas such as academic performance, research, student leadership, community service and citizenship, and contributions to all areas of education.

The scholarship recipients, and their generous donors, were honored and celebrated at the 2018 UI College of Education Scholarship Brunch on Saturday, April 28, which was attended by students, faculty, staff, family members, scholarship donors, and friends.

This year, the UI College of Education awarded 112 individual scholarships to a total of 127 students with awards totaling nearly $325,000 from more than 70 privately supported scholarship funds.

DaVida Anderson, a doctoral candidate in the Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA) program, is one of those students. She shared her own experiences as an ACT scholar and Obermann Fellow in her keynote address, describing the power of the "perfect stranger,"  a person who helps bring together talent and opportunity to make dreams come true by providing support for students like herself to be successful.

"Today, I am going to talk about the power that strangers possess when they match talent with opportunity," Anderson says.

Anderson shared how she took out substantial loans to pay for her bachelor's and master's degrees and how profoundly grateful she is to ACT for supporting her educational odyssey. She plans to continue to empower all students and to give voice to inequities that create barriers for those who are underrepresented and marginalized in her career in higher education.

"I also want to contribute to research that will help magnify the voices of individuals who have, for far too long, been unheard and overlooked," Anderson says. "Without private giving, my desires and my dreams may not have been realized here at the University of Iowa."

"Perfect strangers" from ACT invested in Anderson to support her continued success, she says.
"ACT decided that they were going to connect talent to opportunity by providing funding through the ACT Scholars fellowship. That partnership between the University of Iowa and ACT secured my dream to come here to pursue my Ph.D."

Anderson noted that many perfect strangers attending the celebration are providing those opportunities for other students.
