It’s time for another “Where Do You Work?” Wednesday! This week meet alumna Sherry Carlson (BA ’83 Elementary Education and Special Education).

In 1987, Sherry Carlson earned her Master’s in Education. She taught in Iowa City for a number of years, and then moved back to her hometown of Humboldt, Iowa. She mostly stayed home with her children, but worked part-time subbing and as a student teacher supervisor for Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Carlson went back to teaching full time in 2009 at Humboldt Middle School. Carlson is a level three special education teacher and serves students who have the most needs.

“I love seeing my students grow more independent. They go from needing a paraeducator at all times to only needing one for part of their day,” Carlson says.

Carlson says she owes a lot of her successes to the UI College of Education.

“The University of Iowa College of Education prepared me to have a career that I could use in a variety of ways, and allowed me to be independent,” she says.
