Come join us for a morning of late winter bird-banding at the Iowa Raptor Project’s Bird Blind!
We will begin at the Raptor Center for a presentation about bird-banding, discussing how and why we band birds as well as the legal aspects of bird-banding. Next, we will proceed to the Bird Blind, with its 10 unique feeders, where we will set up a mist net to help us secure birds for banding. Led by our federally and state licensed bird bander, you will be guided through the banding process and learn how to recognize and record the data collected for each bird we band.
You will learn how to safely hold and release banded birds, as well as how to identify the species that frequent our bird feeding station. We will also discuss the various types of food and feeders used at the Iowa Raptor Project and discover ways to attract birds to your home.
Cost is $50 per person. Space is limited!
Activity Level: Easy
Please dress for the weather. You are encouraged to wear comfortable footwear and be prepared for a short walk down to the Raptor Center (200 yards from the parking lot) and back up to the Bird Blind. Expect the ground to be soft and muddy due to seasonal conditions.
