Using Functional Communication Training for Challenging Behavior

Please register hereBTLC Credits: IS, UI REACH

Challenging behaviors are prevalent in 20% of individuals diagnosed with developmental disabilities (DD). Behaviors such as aggression and self-injury often interfere with classroom dynamics and prevent students with DD from being placed in inclusive settings. This presentation addresses these challenges by reviewing functional communication training (FCT), an evidence-based behavioral intervention. FCT teaches individuals an alternative communicative response (e.g., touching a card or saying “break”) to replace challenging behaviors. Students who attend will gain insight into designing FCT interventions based on the function of behavior, identifying communicative responses, providing adequate reinforcement, and overall best practices. Throughout the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to practice developing and implementing FCT interventions for their students.

Learning Goals:

  1. Exemplify knowledge on functional communication training (FCT).
  2. Demonstrate how to properly implement FCT.
  3. Design individualized FCT intervention plans.
