The Paul Blommers Measurement Resources Library provides resources and services to support the teaching and research needs of faculty, staff, and students of the University of Iowa, primarily serving the College of Education.

The Blommers Library collection includes books, journals, research reports, and reference materials related to educational and psychological measurement, testing, assessment, and evaluation as well as an extensive collection of published and unpublished tests. Blommers Library catalog is not part of the University of Iowa Library Infohawk system. Use Blommers catalog to find the material in the library.

History

As Iowa Testing Programs grew in prominence, Director E.F.Lindquist and the faculty decided a library that focused primarily on testing and measurement would be beneficial to them and their graduate students. The Blommers Measurement Resources Laboratory opened with non-state funding from the Iowa Measurement Research Foundation in 1973. Located in the newly-constructed Lindquist Center for Measurement, the library was named in honor of University of Iowa Professor Paul J. Blommers.

Blommers wrote numerous articles in the field of educational statistics and measurement. He and Professor Lindquist co-authored Elementary Statistical Methods in Psychology and Education (c1960, Houghton Mifflin); he and Professor Robert Forsyth co-authored the 2nd edition (c1976, Houghton Mifflin).

Checkout Policies

Blommers Library

Graduate students, staff, and faculty in the College of Education may check out books, journals, dissertations, and reports from the library. Other persons affiliated with the University of Iowa may also check out material on a case by case basis. The general public may use most library materials on site but may not remove materials from the library.

Tests in the collection may be examined and checked out only by qualified graduate students who are taking courses in which standardized tests are taught, and faculty members whose field is involved with standardized tests. These policies are in accordance with the professional ethics and standards of APAAERA, and NCME, and with the regulations of test publishers. Tests from the library are not intended to be administered and the library does not provide any consumable test forms. For further clarification on test use in academic settings, see The Committee on Psychological Tests and Assessment Statement on the Use of Secure Psychological Tests in the Education of Graduate and Undergraduate Psychology Students.

Circulation records are not confidential. If a book you need immediately is checked out, the librarian will contact the person who has it and request they return it.

You may renew material by phone, email, or in person.

Patrons are responsible for replacing lost library materials checked out to them.

MMY database

According to American Psychological Association's Journal Manuscript Editor Chelsea Lee*, the correct APA 6th edition citation style for test reviews from the Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY) database is shown below.

As Ms. Lee explained, at UI we are accessing the reviews via the database vendor EBSCO. However, the URL should direct the reader to the publisher of the MMY and not the database vendor. The MMY is published by the Buros Institute of Mental Measurements at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and therefore the correct URL is http://www.unl.edu/buros

Example:

Sandoval, J. (2003). Test review of the Woodcock-Johnson III. In B. S. Plake, J. C. Impara, & R. A. Spies (Eds.), The fifteenth mental measurements yearbook. Retrieved from http://www.unl.edu

NOTE:

The author of the review and the publication year of the MMY edition are included in the citation, but the test author and publication date of the test itself do not appear.

When you locate a review in the MMY database, look for the field Yearbook. That shows what edition the review appeared in.

Find that edition in the samples below and that will be your citation template.  You will need to fill in the name of the test review author and the name of the test being reviewed. The publication date, the name(s) of editor(s), the name of the yearbook, and the Buros url website address will be the same as the template.

Last name, first initial of review author. (in press). Test review of the name of test. In J. F. Carlson, K. F. Geisinger, & R. A. Spies (Eds.), The nineteenth mental measurements yearbook. Retrieved from the Buros Institute's Test Reviews Online website: http://www.unl.edu/buros

How to cite reviews from the Buros Institute's Mental Measurements Yearbook

The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Sixth Edition (2010) recommends that citations to articles or chapters from an edited book follow this format. (See page 202 for examples.)

Here is the suggested citation format for reviews obtained from The Mental Measurements Yearbook:

Last name, first initial of review author. (Publication year of MMY volume). [Review of the Name Of Test.] In name(s) of MMY editors, The edition mental measurements yearbook (pp. xxx-xxx). Lincoln, NE: Buros Institute of Mental Measurements.

NOTE: the author of the review and the publication year of the MMY edition are included in the citation, but the test author and publication date of the test itself do not appear.

When you locate a review in an MMY volume, note the volume number. Find that volume number in the samples below and that will be your citation template. You will need to fill in the name of the test review author and the name of the test being reviewed. The MMY publication date, the name(s) of editor(s), and the name of the MMY yearbook will be the same as the template.

How to cite test reviews found in Test Critiques

If the test review you are citing is found in Volume 10 of Test Critiques, look for the template below for Volume 10. For your citation, you will need to add the author of the test review, the name of the test, and the page numbers of the review. The publication year, editors' names, publication place, and publisher will be the same as the matching template.

Note:  You are citing a review of a test, not the test itself. Therefore, the author of the test and the publication year of the test do not appear in the citation.
