The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) also awards a bachelor of arts degree. The CLAS bachelor of arts degree and the EDUC bachelor of arts degree are separate degrees. Students may earn two bachelor of arts degrees from the University of Iowa: the CLAS bachelor of arts with a CLAS major, and the EDUC bachelor of arts with an EDUC major. Requirements of the CLAS bachelor of arts are determined by College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The requirements of the EDUC bachelor of arts that are listed above are similar to requirements of the CLAS bachelor of arts, with some differences, as described below in College of Education Credit Policies.

College of Education Credit Hour Policies

College of Education accepts credit toward the College of Education's bachelor of arts degree consistent with College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) Credit Hour Requirements & Policies, with the following exceptions:

  • Maximum hours for Bachelor of Arts: College of Education has no limit on maximum number of semester hours of credit from one academic department.
  • Minimum hours rules: College of Education requires no minimum number of semester hours to be earned in courses offered by the College of Education. College of Education students must meet requirements of a College of Education major.
  • P (pass) and S (satisfactory) hours maximum: A maximum of 15 s.h. of courses with grades of "S" (Satisfactory) will apply toward the 120 s.h. degree requirement. For degrees awarded by the College of Education, courses of the Department of Teaching and Learning with the prefix EDTL are excluded from this limit. College of Education programs may have additional limits on use of courses with grades of "P" or "S" toward the course requirements of their majors, minors, certificates, educator preparation programs, or other curricular programs.

General Education Requirements

General education requirements to earn a bachelor of arts degree from the College of Education (EDUC) are the GE CLAS Core of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS). Requirements and course options of the GE CLAS Core are determined by the CLAS General Education Curriculum Committee, and CLAS administration.

Substitutions

Procedures for undergraduate students in an EDUC bachelor of arts major to request substitutions for requirements of the GE CLAS Core depend on other degree programs of study in which the student is enrolled.

  • Students who are enrolled concurrently in a CLAS bachelor's degree major and an EDUC bachelor of arts major contact CLAS Undergraduate Programs to request the substitution. If the substitution is approved by CLAS for the CLAS bachelor's degree major, then it is approved by EDUC for the EDUC bachelor of arts major.
  • Students who are enrolled in an EDUC bachelor of arts major, but are not enrolled in a CLAS bachelor's degree major, contact the academic advisor of their EDUC bachelor of arts major to initiate the request for a substitution. The academic advisor will work with staff of the EDUC Office of Student Services to review the request and submit the request for review by the College of Education Academic Standards and Records Committee.

Governing Policies

College of Education policies governing student completion of the GE CLAS Core are the CLAS policies for completing the requirements of the GE CLAS Core, unless otherwise specified in College of Education policies.

University of Iowa Residence Requirement

The University of Iowa Residence Requirement is the minimum number of semester hours that must be earned at the University of Iowa in order to be eligible for an undergraduate degree. Credit hours earned in all courses offered by the University of Iowa are considered UI residence hours. Credit hours earned from colleges and universities other than the University of Iowa are considered non-resident credit.

To earn an undergraduate degree from College of Education, students must satisfy the University of Iowa (UI) Residence Requirement by satisfying one of the following:

  • Earn the final 30 semester hours after admission to the University of Iowa, or
  • Earn 45 of the final 60 semester hours after admission to the University of Iowa, or
  • Earn an overall total of 90 semester hours after admission to the University of Iowa.

Credit by examination may be resident or non-resident credit. Credit by examination earned while a student is enrolled in a college of the University of Iowa is considered UI residence credit. Credit by examination earned while a student is enrolled in a college or university other than The University of Iowa, and brought to Iowa as part of a transfer transcript, is considered non-resident credit.

[This requirement is unrelated to Classification of Residents and Nonresidents for Admission and Tuition Purposes.]

The College of Education offers one bachelor of science major, Science Studies, but does not award the bachelor of science degree. The bachelor of science with major in Science Studies is awarded by College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Requirements to earn the bachelor of science with major in Science Studies are governed by policies of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS). College of Education exceptions to CLAS Credit Hour Requirements & Policies do not apply to the bachelor of science with major in Science Studies.

Graduate Degrees

The College of Education offers many graduate majors. Degrees awarded in connection with the graduate majors offered by the College of Education are awarded by the Graduate College and are subject to policies set out in the Manual of Rules and Regulations of the Graduate College .

Graduate majors may have grade and GPA requirements that are in addition to requirements of the Graduate College. Grade and GPA requirements of graduate majors are defined in program policies and governed by the program faculty.
