Happy “Where Do You Work?” Wednesday! This week meet alumna Ashley Hoyer (BA 11’ Elementary Education, endorsement in Math Education).

After graduating from the University of Iowa College of Education, Ashley Hoyer obtained an endorsement in reading from Iowa Wesleyan University. Recently, she graduated from the UI College of Education’s completely on-line Masters of Arts in Teaching, Leadership and Cultural Competency graduate program (MATLCC). Hoyer completed the 18-month coursework at the end of the summer of 2018 and officially graduated December of 2018.

Hoyer began her teaching career at James Madison Middle School in Burlington, Iowa working as a paraprofessional. She worked there for half a school year and was then hired as a third grade teacher at Pence Elementary in Fairfield, Iowa. Currently, Hoyer is in her fourth year teaching fourth grade at Harlem Elementary in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. She is also the Tier 1 Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) co-leader.

Hoyer says what she loves most about her job is that it doesn’t feel like work.

“I go to Harlan every day and work with some of the most amazing children in the world,” Hoyer says. “As much as they learn from me, I learn twice as much from them.”

Hoyer’s favorite thing about being a teacher is the lasting relationships formed with students.

“I take pride in knowing that I am a part of a group of people who are shaping our nation’s future,” Hoyer says.

Hoyer says the University of Iowa College of Education believes in students and works hard to prepare them for an amazing and rewarding teaching career.

“The amount of effort that the College of Education puts in to prepare their soon-to-be teachers is unlike any other,” Hoyer says. “As I began my graduate college journey, it was the staff that ensured me choosing to further my education was the right move. They reassured me that it would be worth it, and boy were they right.”
