Presenter(s): Amy Kahle; Director of Intervention Programs for the United Action for Youth.
Description: This session will be a quick review of the DBT concepts from Level 1 and a deeper dive into applying them in practice. How does DBT fit into a trauma informed classroom? Who benefits from DBT? What might implementation look like? Can I use DBT in my science (or math or English) class? What do youth say about the skills they’ve learned? Time will be given to workshop using DBT concepts in all areas of education. Examples of mindfulness practices that can be used in the classroom will be included throughout the session.
Note: This is not a DBT training, but an overview of the practice and an example of how it might be implemented.
Learning Goals: 1) Participants will be able to summarize the three states of mind; 2) Participants will practice mindfulness; 3) Participants will be able to describe how mindfulness can benefit the teenage brain; 4) Participants will be able to name the three modules in Dialectic Behavioral Therapy; 5) Participants will be able to describe how DBT-informed practices might be used in the classroom.
