Use of Assessment for Identification and Programming in Gifted Education

Description: Often, assessment is viewed as the culmination of a process: measuring what a student knows or can do at various points throughout the curriculum. However, to be most effective, assessment must be designed to inform future actions, such as what a student should be taught next or what program or intervention may benefit them. This workshop will offer an introduction to various uses of assessment within gifted education, including to inform identification and programming decisions. We will also discuss common criticisms of assessment and identification practices and ways to improve assessment processes to address underrepresentation.

Learning goals:  Define assessment. Connect assessment data to making informed decisions.
