STEAM Learning on a Budget: From Paper Prototyping to Simple STEAM Kits

Register here. TLC Credit: STEAM

Presenter(s): Kay Ramey, Assistant Professor of Learning Sciences and Educational Psychology, Darrell Currington, Makerspace Facilitator

Description: In this workshop, students will gain hands-on experience participating in and designing STEAM activities using the everyday materials and low-cost STEAM kits available in many schools. For the hands-on STEAM challenge, students will get to choose between making recycled fashion, articulating animals, or Lego cars. They will also learn about other materials and kits available in many K-12 schools for STEAM learning. They'll be provided with additional resources and ideas for activities they might facilitate in their classrooms, and they'll have an opportunity to try designing their own STEAM activity.

Please bring a laptop to the workshop if possible as you will need it for some of the hands-on and collaborative activities.

Learning goals: 1. To become familiar with a variety of makerspace tools, technologies, and materials. 2. To develop the necessary skills and mindsets for facilitating integrated STEAM learning experiences for students. 3. To learn how to design and facilitate interest-driven, inclusive, and culturally sustaining STEAM activities.
