Dominican Republic: Education, Culture, and Society
University of Iowa students will travel to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic to study the education ecosystem. They will come to understand formal and non-formal education opportunities, the public school system, and barriers and opportunities for development. Students will also interact with key stakeholders within the ecosystem including authorities, higher education institutions and community-based organizations.
The cost of this trip is $3,000 (airfare not included). Course fee includes lodging, group ground transportation in the Dominican Republic and daily breakfast, lunches, and dinners. Airfare can be booked independently or through a UI travel agent. More details on airfare and travel to the Dominican Republic will be discussed with participants.
To apply to be a part of this program, please complete an application. Applications will be reviewed as they are received. There is a maximum capacity of 25 students. Students who apply and are accepted into the program will also participate in mandatory pre-departure planning sessions Friday afternoons on 2/16/24 and 3/1/24. This program is non-credit bearing.

Educational Intervention – Experience Peri Urban Formal and Non-Formal Visit the Juan Pablo Duarte Public School in Haina to discuss public education challenges Visit Casa de la Cultura de Haina to understand how arts and culture play in role in community education |
Day 4: |
Community Service
Visit La Merced Non-Formal Community School to understand education challenges faced by migrant population. Design educational resources with children that allow them to learn basic words in English. |
Day 5: |
Education Opportunities in Rural Areas- Bonao Meet with Fundación Falconbridge Visit the first Charter School in the D.R.- Cigar Family Foundation Model School |
Day 6: |
Travel to Boca Chica/ Juan Dolio Visit an education service program for orphan boys. Take a Merengue Class at Academia Yazme Yow a local dance and culture academy managed by a young leader and community changemaker. |
Day 7: |
Free Day in Juan Dolio Enjoy a day at the beach Program closure ceremony and special dinner |
