Program Completion Testing

Iowa law [Iowa Code 256.16 1.a.(2)] requires Teacher Education Program (TEP) students who are completing preparation for initial licensure as teachers to pass state-approved assessments as a requirement for completion of the Teacher Education Program.

Test Options

All University of Iowa student teachers who are completing preparation for initial licensure as teachers in Spring 2018 and after will be required to complete edTPA. All Elementary Education student teachers in Fall 2017 will prepare edTPA as a requirement of the student teaching seminar.

In Fall 2017, passing scores on either edTPA or Praxis Subject Assessments will satisfy the program completion testing requirement for University of Iowa student teachers who are completing preparation for initial licensure as teachers.

Fall 2017 student teachers in programs in 5-12 or K-12 programs may wish to seek guidance from program faculty on test selection

  • Praxis Subject Assessments: two tests required: one in pedagogy, and one in content (knowledge of a subject area) or
  • edTPA: A performance-based assessment.

Minimum Scores

Tests and minimum scores on this website are effective August 1, 2017 through July 31, 2018. Test and minimum score requirements are reviewed annually by the Iowa Department of Education; changes (if any) become effective each August 1.
