Educator preparation programs of The University of Iowa College of Education are approved by the state of Iowa for Iowa teaching licensure. For students planning to teach in the state of Illinois, The University of Iowa College of Education has worked with the Illinois State Board of Education to identify and gain approval of University of Iowa courses for certain Illinois license and endorsement requirements.

In August, 2016 the Illinois State Board of Education published new requirements for middle grades endorsements that will become effective February 1, 2018.

This information is offered to assist students of The University of Iowa with their academic planning. Students planning for teaching licensure in Illinois should verify current requirements with the Illinois State Board of Education.

Beginning February 1, 2018 - Middle School Program Required

Beginning February 1, 2018 - The state of Illinois will require a "full/focused" middle grades program for middle grades endorsement in a content area.

Through January 31, 2018 - Pre-Approved Courses

The courses below, with content courses meeting Illinois requirements, may make a student eligible for middle-school-level content endorsements in Illinois. The Illinois State Board of Education will not issue middle school endorsements under these requirements after January 31, 2018.

These courses may not be available every academic semester/session.

  • Middle School Methods:
    EDTL:4032 / 07S:132 Middle School Curriculum and Methods
  • Early Adolescent Development: One of either
    PSQF:4130 / 07P:130 Early Adolescent Development or
    PSQF:4133 / 07P:133 The Adolescent and Young Adult
