Fingerprinting for Iowa and national criminal history checks is required for initial licensure application to the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BOEE), unless the applicant previously has been fingerprinted for a BOEE coaching, substitute, or other authorization. Fingerprinting for other states or jurisdictions, or for employment, will not substitute for this requirement.

There are four options for fingerprinting.

Held the semester before student teaching, Fingerprinting Day is the preferred time to get fingerprinted for Iowa licensure. BOEE staff will come to campus to electronically scan fingerprints of the next semester's licensure applicants.

  • Complete online application to Board of Educational Examiners. At the Background Packet step, select "An Iowa College, University, or AEA has or will arrange fingerprinting for me."
  • Schedule an appointment for Fingerprinting Day: Watch email for instructions on how to schedule.
  • Things to bring to Fingerprinting Day:
    • BoEE Electronic Fingerprinting Worksheet, completed with the applicant's information. Watch email for the worksheet.
    • Proof of payment (show email receipt or printed receipt)
    • State-issued identification that includes a photograph (Driver's License, passport, or other)
  • On Fingerprinting Day, the fingerprinting should take about 10 minutes.
