Fingerprinting for Iowa and national criminal history checks is required for initial licensure application to the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BOEE), unless the applicant previously has been fingerprinted for a BOEE coaching, substitute, or other authorization. Fingerprinting for other states or jurisdictions, or for employment, will not substitute for this requirement.

First, apply for the license

Complete online application to Board of Educational Examiners. Find directions from one of the following web pages:

At the Background Packet step, select "Please mail me a fingerprint packet."

When you have received the fingerprint packet from the BOEE, you can arrange to be fingerprinted.

Arrange to be fingerprinted

You can be fingerprinted by the University of Iowa Department of Public Safety (University of Iowa Police), or by another police department that provides the service.

University of Iowa Department of Public Safety

Department of Public Safety - Fingerprint Services web page

The Department of Public Safety offers fingerprinting by appointment. Review the Fingerprint Services web page for instructions on how to schedule an appointment, what to do and what not to do before coming to the appointment, and what materials to bring to the appointment.

Offices are located in the basement of the University Capitol Centre (UCC). Take the Capitol Street Garage elevators at the south end of the University Capitol Centre to the basement.

Things to bring:

  • Materials required by the Department of Public Safety (currently including a face mask)
  • The fingerprint cards you received from the BOEE
  • Credit card or debit card (Mastercard, Visa, or Discover) to pay $10 fee
  • State-issued identification that includes a photograph (Driver's License, passport, or other)

Return your completed fingerprint cards to the BOEE, according to instructions provided by the BOEE.

Another police department

Licensure applicants not in the Iowa City area may be fingerprinted by an authorized fingerprinter at any police department.

Contact the police department in advance to learn how to arrange for fingerprinting, and what materials to bring at the time of fingerprinting.

Things to bring:

  • Materials required by the police department
  • The fingerprint cards you received from the BOEE
  • State-issued identification that includes a photograph (Driver's License, passport, or other)
  • Fingerprinting fee, if any

Tips

  • Submit your completed fingerprint cards to the BOEE by the licensure application deadline you were given by College of Education staff; the background check takes several weeks to complete
  • Complete two fingerprint cards and return both completed cards to the BOEE
  • Be sure that the fingerprinting officer has signed the fingerprint cards
