Staff Performance Reviews

All University staff members should be aware of the expectations of his or her position as well as how they will be evaluated.  To obtain a detailed explanation on University performance review purpose, philosophy, and policy please visit Performance Review for University Staff.

P & S and Merit staff reviews must be completed no later than March 31. 

Professional & Scientific (P&S) Staff

UI HR has entered into an agreement with Sucessfactors to provide an online goal management and performance review system.  Currently this system is available to non-organized P & S staff.  The new review system, under My UI Career, allows for goal management through the Goal Plan tool.  In addition to the annual review, ongoing conversations about goals and progress between supervisors and staff are encouraged on a quarterly basis.  The Goal Plan allows for tracking progress, and adjustments may be made within the Goal Plan if priorities change during the review period.  The Goal Plan and Performance Review are accessed through the employee self-service website, under the PERSONAL tab, My UI Career, Annual Goals and Performance Review (NEW).  Click on this link to access the system.


  • Supervisors notify employees when it is time for the employee to complete a self –review.
  • Employee completes the self-review form, found in My UI Career, under Performance.
  • Employee completes comments for current year’s goals and may start to complete future goals for next review period.  This may be done in self-review or updated in the Goal Plan, which populates the self-review form.     
  • When the employee has completed the self-review portion of the evaluation, he/she may finalize the form, by clicking on the button, found at the bottom right corner of form. The employee may also save for later.
  • Once finalized, the supervisor reviews, adds comments and ratings in My UI Career, HOLDS form.
  • Employee and supervisor meet.
  • Supervisor may modify the form after the meeting, if needed,  and sends final form to employee, after entering the “performance discussion” date.  This is the date that is recorded in the Human Resource Information System (HRIS).
  • Employee has opportunity to make additional comments and finalize form.

Merit Staff

Performance evaluation template for Merit Staff . The Overall Performance Rating is required for P & S staff, and is optional for Merit staff.


  • HR or supervisors notify employees when it is time for the employee to complete a self –review.
  • Employee completes the self-review. This is done on the performance review form, by completing this past year’s accomplishment, comments, and comments on the Universal Competencies.
  • When employee has completed the self-review, he/she may save the form and send to the supervisor.
  • Supervisor reviews and adds comments. The ratings are optional.
  • Employee and supervisor meet.
  • Supervisor may modify the form after the meeting, if needed, and sends final form to employee. Once the employee has signed, the final form should be sent to COE HR, N479 LC, or sent via email attachment to christine-annicella@uiowa.edu no later than March 31, 2014.

  • MyQuickCoach The newest e-learning resource on campus is filled with short video lessons, articles and PDFs, and is a great resource for both personal and professional development.  MyQuickCoach can also be accessed from Employee Self Service.
  • Sexual Harassment Prevention Training

    New-hire and refresher sexual harassment prevention instructor led training is offered through UI Learning and Development.  Both online and instructor-led classes are available. 
    Training is mandatory for teaching assistants, post doctoral appointees, and all faculty and staff appointed at 50% or greater.  Training should be completed by
    • New Hires: within the first 6 months of employment 
    • New Supervisors: within the first two months of hire
    • TAs: an instructor led session should be completed within the first 8 weeks of the semester.

A refresher course of the Sexual Harassment Prevention Education training must be completed every three years from the date of the most recent training.

  • Instructor Led Classes - Click on one of the offered courses to sign up to attend.
  • Online Classes - Select and complete the course most applicable to you. 
  • The names of all UI employees who have completed an on-line module will be captured in "My Training" and provided to the college.
