What can I expect during a typical session?
You will have 25 or 55 minutes to talk with a graduate writing consultant. The writing consultant will ask you questions about your writing goals and concerns. She may not be able to read your entire paper or project, so you should be ready to indicate which sections to focus on during your appointment. Come prepared to work actively on your writing!

Will you proofread or edit my writing?
Our mission is to help you improve your abilities to write. Consultations are interactive sessions, not proofreading or editing sessions. We will do our best to answer your questions and work together to apply our discussion to your writing task, but we will not go through your paper line by line to point out every mistake.

How can I join the waitlist?
Using our online schedule, choose the clock icon next to the date to add yourself to the waiting list. As soon as an appointment is canceled, everyone on the waiting list is notified of the opening, and the time slot is "up for grabs." Whichever student makes an appointment first is the one who gets that appointment.

What should I do if I need to cancel?
If you need to cancel an appointment, please do so at least six hours before your scheduled appointment time. If you do not arrive at a scheduled appointment, you will be marked as a “no show.” Three no-shows will block you from the scheduling system.

Why won’t the system allow me to cancel my appointment?
The system will not allow writers to cancel appointments within six hours of the meeting time. If you must cancel an appointment within that time period, please email educ-cwc@uiowa.edu to inform your tutor. Your time may still be marked as missed.

Why won’t the system allow me to schedule an appointment?
The system will not allow you to schedule appointments if you have already reached the maximum one hour for that week.

Is the writing center open during finals?
The Writing Resource is closed during finals week.

Where else can I get help with my writing?
The University of Iowa Main Writing Center, located in the EPB building, serves the entire campus community.

How do walk in appointments work?
Walk-in appointments are available on a first-come, first-serve basis from 12:00 - 1:00 Monday through Friday. We will prioritize writers who do not already have an appointment for that week and did not sign up for enrollment.
