Awarded to an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student in any program in the College of Education. Based on merit and need, the recipient must be a U.S. citizen with first preference for a student in the top 20 percent of his/her class with second preference for a student with demonstrated need. Established by gifts from Dr. Holmes (PhD '61).

More about Emma E. Holmes

Dr. Emma Bauman Holmes received her Ph.D. in Elementary Education from The University of Iowa.  She received her A.B. in Psychology from Mount Holyoke College and her M.A. in Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. 

Dr. Holmes' professional career spanned over forty years during which she served as a classroom teacher in Elmhurst, Illinois and San Jose, California; as an instructor at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana; and as a professor of education and child development in the Department of Elementary and Bilingual Education at California State University at Fullerton from which she retired in 1990. 

Dr. Holmes authored a number of books about teaching mathematics to elementary school children and was named an Outstanding Educator in America.
