Admission Requirements & Application Instructions (College of Education Teacher Education Program)

Admission to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) is selective. This means we may receive more applications than we have available spots in some programs.
Applications submitted by the priority deadline are considered first

  • Plan ahead. Some steps in the application process may take several weeks to complete. Please allow at least 6 weeks to complete and submit your application.
  • Submit everything by the deadline. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed by the faculty.

These admission requirements and application instructions are for current high school students or first time college students only.

Two admission paths

There are two admission paths for current high school/ first-time college students who want to become teachers - direct admission and regular admission.

Direct Admission

Students interested in Elementary Education or Music Education who meet certain additional requirements may be admitted directly into the Teacher Education Program when they submit their application to the University of Iowa. If you indicate your interest in either Elementary or Music on your application and meet the additional requirements, you will be notified of the next steps to take.

  • Music Education: High school GPA of 3.0 or higher and have been accepted into a music studio.
  • Elementary Education: High school GPA of 3.8 or higher and an ACT composite score of 27 or higher.

Regular Admission

If you were not eligible for direct admission to our program when you were accepted to UI, you may submit an application to the Teacher Education Program once you have completed 30 hours of earned college credit.

  • Be sure to indicate your interest in teaching when you visit and/or apply to the University of Iowa.
  • Follow the Teacher Education Program application instructions for current UI undergraduate students once you are admitted to the University of Iowa.

Undergraduate students should complete the Praxis Core test with the following minimum scores: Reading-156, Writing-162, and Mathematics-150.  Visit the TEP admissions resource page for more information on scheduling and completing this exam.   • Documented completion of 10‐hour Pre‐admission School Field Experience

  • Two recommendations. Ask recommendation writers to complete the PDF iconrecommendation form. Writers may return the completed forms to you for upload, or send the them directly to the Office of Student Services for attaching to your application.
  • An essay (doc, docx, pdf) of no more than 500 words, on the topic: Please describe on a personal and professional level why you want to be a teacher, and specifically in the particular program area to which you are applying.
  • A resume (doc, docx, pdf) of paid and/or volunteer work experience, including jobs, employers and dates of employment
  • For undergraduate and post‐baccalaureate admission, cumulative grade-point average is considered and reviewed on an individual basis.

Graduate applicants with grade‐point averages below 3.00 will be considered by program faculty, who may elect to petition the Graduate College to admit applicants who demonstrate exceptional promise for graduate study and teaching.

Important Information for International Applicants

Teacher Education Programs of the University of Iowa are approved preparation programs for teaching in the state of Iowa and provide good preparation for teaching elsewhere in the United States.

  • Successful applicants will have strong oral English‐language competency and demonstrate knowledge of or ability to adapt to the culture of U.S. schools.
  • For non‐native speakers of English, TOEFL is required for consideration of an application if the applicant has not completed a degree at a college or university where English is the language of instruction.
  • International applicants are encouraged to complete the 10‐Hour Pre‐Admission School Field Experience in a school that offers a U.S. curriculum. International applicants must meet the stated minimum scores on the admission test.
