In the United States, 65% of students are not reading at proficient levels by the end of elementary and middle school. This has been the case for the past 20 years! These students have significant reading difficulties and are at risk for reading disabilities. They require explicit instruction targeting interrelated reading components. This workshop will demonstrate evidence-based strategies to support struggling readers that teachers will be able to take-away and immediately apply to their learners with reading difficulties. Topics will cover print awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, irregular words, multisyllabic words, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, motivation, and assessment.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact the Baker Teacher Leader Center, 319-335-5623, in advance.
