Within general education settings, the classroom teacher often may be the first line of support for students experiencing a mental health crisis. This workshop is intended to provide pre-service general education teachers with an overview of acute-onset mental health concerns that may adversely impact academic and psychosocial functioning at school. Issues surrounding school-based mental health resources and maintaining student confidentiality will be discussed. Special emphasis will be given to recognizing and addressing the needs of students with suicidal thoughts and self-injurious behaviors.
