Year after year schools and districts implement strategies for boosting the educational achievement of students experiencing poverty. Year after year educational outcome disparities barely budge. This is mostly because we keep adopting strategies that do not address the root causes of the disparities. In this interactive workshop we ask, “What would our strategies and initiatives for strengthening learning conditions for students experiencing poverty be if they were based, not on simplistic stereotypes, but on deep understandings of the barriers and inequities weighing on them in and out of school?" After a process of building these deep understandings using the equity literacy framework, case studies, and other interactive tools, we will explore instructional, relational and leadership strategies. These strategies are grounded in evidence for what works as well as a commitment to equity.
