Many schools in the United States have adopted some system Response to Intervention or RtI, and in Iowa, the system the synonymous term for this system is “Multi-Tiered System of Supports” (or “MTSS”). MTSS is a decision-making framework of evidence-based practices that is meant to address all students’ needs. MTSS is used to judge the overall health of an educational system AND to identify students who need additional supports. Within the MTSS model, students receive small group and/or individualized instruction, and educators monitor students’ progress frequently and sensitively. Ultimately, the goal of MTSS is to supports student’s proficiency in the Iowa Core standards and prepare for life after high school graduation.
