Recent statistics show 1 in 4 children have a vision problem significant enough to affect their performance in school. In addition, vision related learning problems, dyslexia, ADD/ADHD and learning disabilities all have the same symptoms, yet vision problems are commonly uninvestigated. Therefore, it is essential for all school practitioners to: 1) develop an awareness of the visual requirements at all stages of learning, 2) be able to identify students at risk in the classroom, and 3) have a general understanding of the visual system processing steps as it relates to classroom learning. Knowledge of vision and its connection to learning will ensure success for children not only in the classroom, but ultimately in life.
